Revamp your wardrobe
What is more frustrating than trying to put yourself together with clothing that doesn't fit, is thread bare or went out of style decades ago? We all know what it feels like to have a closet full of clothes and absolutely nothing to wear. And there are plenty of reasons why this happens — impulsive purchases, trends that went out of style, avoiding the fitting room, not following the washing instructions on the care label, that sweater you received as a gift from your first boyfriend...well you get the picture.
The truth is that a good wardrobe has to be planned. And the first and most important step in planning your wardrobe is getting into that stuffed closet and overfilled drawers and making some room.
Step 1: Try everything on
If it is worn out, doesn't fit or is the wrong cut for your body type, get rid of it — yes even your skinny jeans need to go. The more clothes that you have that you don’t use, the less space you have for the ones that make you look great.
Step 2: Evaluate the pieces that fit
Remember, it is okay to keep clothing that only needs minor alterations. A stressed zipper, open seams or items that can be hemmed are an easy fix if you have a good tailor at hand. A trip to the tailor is much less expensive than having to buy all new clothing, and they will also be able to help you by taking your measurements and giving you an idea of your silhouette.
Step 3: Reorganize your clothes
Begin by selecting uniform hangers for your closet. Use wooden hangers for coats and jackets to maintain shape at the shoulder. Use one type of heavy plastic hangers for skirts, plastic suit hangers for pants and skirts and soft, padded hangers for blouses and dresses that can be hung.
Step 4: Assess your accessories
Accessories are also an important part of keeping your closet in check. Keep your shoes and boots in their original boxes, or if you prefer to keep them in clear view, invest in a hanging shoe rack. Hang your belts from a hanger or store them in an accessory-specific drawer of your dresser. Scarves, hats and gloves can also be stored in the drawer with your belts. Use sandwich or quart sized bags and label them for quick retrieval.
Step 5: Make a list of necessary replacements
Is your closet looking pretty bare? This is the time to make a list of replacements. Make sure to replace all of your classics with items of exceptional quality. There are just some pieces that are good staples for any woman's wardrobe including:
- black dress
- black skirt
- black pants
- black turtleneck
- black pumps
- white shirt
- pant suit
- nice feminine blouse
- fitted jacket
- sweater set
Step 6: Go shopping
This can be the most fun part of cleaning your wardrobe. But the truth is, there are a lot of women out there who actually dislike shopping. If you had a closet full of clothing that you couldn't use, chances are you could use some help.
Did you know that many major department stores and specialty boutiques have personal shoppers to assist you? If you don't want to limit yourself to specific stores, you can actually hire a personal shopper or stylist. Or if you feel that these types of services might be out of your price range, there are some fantastic books on the market now dedicated to shopping and finding your style. Check your local bookstore or library.
Investing in the right wardrobe is priceless...so get started. Before you know it, you'll look marvelous.
