Dressing up for the holidays

Ahhh, the holidays. There's always plenty of excitement and joy associated with the holiday season. Visiting with family and friends, dinners and get-togethers, shopping, you name it. But one of the best things about this time of year is the parties! There's something special about holiday galas and events that brings out the best in people. So naturally, we all want to look our best, too.

With so much going, it's easy to get stressed about what to wear. But don't get overwhelmed. Dressing for holiday special events doesn't have to be daunting. Instead, you should take this chance to let your wardrobe shine and sparkle and enjoy the festive spirit. Check out some ways to make holiday dressing enjoyable, with fashionable dressing tips on what to wear.

Glamour and glitter

  • Use the holidays as your time to shine. Think of the season as an opportunity for you to bust out onto the Hollywood red carpet. Depending on how formal the event you’re attending is, choose glamorous, elegant gowns or dresses that accentuate your figure. Keep to simple, yet bold, warm colors, like black, red, and dark blue, which have more of a timeless, sophisticated look. Within terms of fabric choices, stick to satin, velvet, jersey and crepe, which are perfect for holiday attire.
  • Complement your look with a dressy jacket, especially since the weather will be cold. Again, stick to solid colors, like black or red, as they can class up every look, no matter how bold or simple the rest of your holiday attire might be.
  • Add another touch of elegance with cashmere scarves or silk pashiminas. In addition to keeping you warm and toasty, they can add grace to your already chic look. Try to coordinate them to the color of your jacket or dress to further highlight the outfit.

The sparkle and glitz

  • Jewelry is a classic touch to holiday wear. Add some sparkle to your holiday attire with some bold, eye-catching jewels. Think: diamonds, rhinestones or anything that sparkles and glistens. Look for dangling, loop or post earrings with unique design, elegant and modern cocktail rings, necklaces that are bold and/or colorful and bracelets that call attention to your wrist.
  • Don't worry about going too big or bold or incorporating too much color. Just keep in mind that if you do end up going with a big ring or necklace, make up for it by going minimal somewhere else.

The shoes to match

  • The basic black heel pump is a classic look for the holidays. Not only is it versatile enough that you can wear it with pretty much anything, it also happens to look great, too.
  • If the weather is a bit cold out, you might want to cozy up in some tall, stylish evening boots. They are a great complement to skirts and most dresses, and can add an extra touch of sophistication to your outfit.
  • Also, feel free to get creative as well. Try adding an old pair of costume or vintage earrings to your shoes for a little sparkle and shine. They can go a long way in adding a little character and style when worn with a basic pair of heels.

Remember, dressing up for the holidays doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go on a department store shopping spree either. Keep it simple. You can easily get the look you’re going for with a combination of your existing wardrobe, thrift and vintage shop finds and the occasional designer piece. The most important thing, however, is to use the holidays as your time to shine. Have fun with it all, and be as glamorous as you want to be. Oh, and take lots of photos!
