New and improved fabrics

With technology constantly changing and evolving to improve our daily lives, it’s only right that it comes in handy in keeping us warm. With the cold weather months coming, it’s best to try and figure out what will keep you protected from the cold.

That’s where Gore Tex comes in. In case you haven’t heard of it, Gore Tex is an advanced fabric that is used in many winter coats and other winter gear. It is best known for being waterproof and extremely breathable. It’s also relatively lightweight, so winter coats made from it are never too heavy. In fact, it may be in your coat right now.

What makes Gore Tex so technologically impressive is its waterproof properties. The make up of the fabric contains tiny pores that are smaller than a water drop, but bigger than water vapour particles. So it allows vapour in while it keeps water out. Thus, it’s breathable while also completely waterproof. It also moves sweat from the inside to the outside, which keeps you cool as well. Pretty cool! Another added benefit is that the material also happens to be windproof, making it an excellent choice for those winter months.

So if you’re out looking for the perfect winter coat to keep you warm, dry, and light, then consider Gore Tex—it will be your best friend in the cold!

Believe it or not, thanks to technological advancements even old materials, like wool, have been enhanced to offer improved qualities. Thanks to research and improved production methods, the new wool is a machine washable fibre that delivers superior performance and great looks, all while being easy to care for

Remember the itch? Well, researchers were able to pinpoint that large barbs on the fabrics surface lead to wool causing itchy sensations when in contact with skin. Knowing this, garment manufacturers have moved to much finer wool fibres such as Merino wool, which eliminates the itchiness. Processors of wool have also developed a host of new wool treatments that help smooth out the barbs to make it softer and more versatile.

But wool’s performance characteristics don’t stop there. It also happens to be naturally stain resistant (thanks to its lanolin), wrinkle resistant, quick-drying, antimicrobial (meaning it resists body door), and fire-retardant. Some kinds of wool, like Loden, are even naturally water resistant. Strong? In a micron-to-micron comparison, wool fibre is stronger than steel.

With these modern enhancements, try and reconsider the new wool the next time you’re out looking for warm weather colds.

Again, keep in mind that advancements in fabric technology are always being made that can benefit us greatly. What better benefit than extra insulation and warmth during the cold? Yay technology!
