Ocean-Free Guide to Keeping Kids Cool

You may have planned a fun summer getaway someplace by the lake or the ocean—but what to do with all those days in between with the sweltering heat? Keep your kids from wasting away the days by the television with these energizing ways to keep cool while having fun in the sun. So dive in and get ready to be sprayed, splashed, and splattered in the process.

Drip-drip-DRENCH!

It's the classic game of duck-duck-GOOSE, except the person who's "It" walks around the circle with a cup or jug of water. Perhaps best played in bathing suits, this classic twist on an old favourite will have kids in helpless knots of anticipation.

Paint with Water

Don't underestimate this simple favourite for your younger kids. Give them a bucket of water and a thick brush, and let them paint designs on the walkway, fence—anywhere there's a dry, smooth surface. It'll keep them cool, creative, and active.

Frozen Shirt Relay

The night before a hot day, take a few old undershirts (preferably those old ones of your husband's that you've been dying to toss), lightly dampen, and then freeze them overnight. In classic relay style, ask bathing suit-clad kids to shrug the frozen things on. Whichever team gets theirs on first wins.

Ice Ball Surprise

This one requires a bit of forethought. Start by filling a plastic food container or zip lock bag with water, then plop in a small action figure or piece of plastic jewellery. Then seal the container or bag and let it freeze. Next time kids complain about the heat, take these out, and let them have fun melting their hidden treasure…floating it in a kiddie pool…rolling it on the grass… or anywhere.

The Kid Car Wash

Why not involve your kids in the next water activity—with their very own kid car wash! It's a playful obstacle course and they get to decide what goes in it! The sprinkler, the hose, wet towels strung from the swing set, or blowing bubbles? Get creative with fun ways to keep your playful little puppies cool and clean.
