Cold Weather

Cold Weather? Here’s the Clothing Forecast

It’s cold outside. You have to deal with the rain, wind, cold mornings, and chilly nights. Sure, it would be nice to be able to stay inside and keep toasty all throughout the cold weather months. But then again it would be nice to have a money tree in the backyard too. At some point, we all have to go about our daily lives which involve having to step outside and outdoors. Dealing with the cold weather doesn’t have to put chill in your bones though. Here are a few more ways to dress to cope with the cold in an easy, warm, and manageable way. Check out some of these suggestions from Tide®, and you’ll warm up and dress up to the idea of cold weather in no time.

Layers, Layers, Layers

Layering is the best strategy for dealing with cold weather. Multiple layers give you the option of removing pieces to adjust to your changing body temperature. This way, you can always shed off extra layers when you heat up, and put them back on when you’re colder. It also allows you to be well prepared for fluctuations in the weather throughout the day. Try going for warm, zip-up vests and sweaters, which will allow you to easily take them on and off, without messing up your hair or other clothing. One note: Try and resist the temptation to overdress, because this can cause excessive sweating and can make you feel uncomfortable and susceptible to catching a cold.

Cold weather fabrics

The best fabrics suited for dealing with cold weather are those that have high insulating properties. Even better are fabrics that can insulate even when faced with wetting, i.e., body sweat or rain. These fabrics include Polypropylene, wool, wool/synthetic blends, and treated polyesters like Capilene. Make sure that the fabric you’re wearing closest to your body can wick moisture away from your skin to protect you from being cold. Try and avoid wearing cotton because it has poor insulating ability, which decreases even more when it becomes wet.

Cover up

It might sound obvious, but always wear a hat or cap! Everyone knows that you can lose a lot of heat through your head. So make sure you keep your head well protected and insulated. Keep your hands protected and warm as well, as the hands become cold faster than other body parts. Keep your feet well insulated as well. Consider wearing two pairs of socks—an inner pair and an outer pair. By keeping your head, hands, and feet warm at all times, you’ll be better prepared to stay comfortable and toasty while out in the cold.

Follow these simple guidelines, and you’ll be hot to the idea of stepping outside in the cold weather months. Dressing properly is the key to keeping warm!
